What Do I Wear?
For your first class, just wear athletic clothing that is comfortable likes shorts and a t-shirt. Once you sign up, you will need to get a uniform (called a Gi) to wear to class.
Are Martial Arts Safe to Practice?
Training in Martial Arts is very safe, in fact it is one of the safest sports, in my opinion. We wear a lot of protective gear to prevent injuries and training is done at each individuals pace. This means if you need to rest or sit out, you can. If want to spar or roll lightly, you can do that.
In addition, Duncan MMA focuses on teaching proper technique and safety measures to reduce potential training injuries as much as possible.
Will It Make My Child Violent?
Not at all! In fact, martial arts has the exact opposite effect. By learning to protect themselves and working hard to accomplish a goal, children gain confidence and mental peace. Children (and Adults!) that train in martial arts feel less of a need to use violence to solve their problems and gain a better ability to remain calm under pressure.
Getting your child (and yourself) into martial arts training is one of the best steps you can take to boost confidence and reduce ego.
Do I Need To Be Fit or Coordinated To Do This?
Not at all! We have students of all kinds that start training martial arts with us from different backgrounds and different goals. Training at Duncan MMA is individually based and tailored around you!
You don’t need to feel “in shape” or “athletic” in order to start. Just sign up for classes and give it a go. In fact, you will be surprised at how much training at Duncan MMA can help you to get into shape, feel confident, and improve your overall self.
How Long Until I Get My Black Belt?
The time it takes to get a black belt varies from person to person and depends on the style you train. The first thing to understand is that we not a “black belt factory” like some schools. There is no guarantee that you will get one in a specific amount of time because getting to black belt is about developing a skill not about paying a set fee and showing up a certain number of times.
What is true, is that everyone can get a black belt! It just takes hard work and determination. In general, it takes most people about 6-8 years to get a black belt in SGC Karate and about 10 years to get one in BJJ. The time required can be significantly less or more depending on a number of factors such as how much you train and what your past experience is.
What’s more, the journey to black belt is worth it even if it does take a long time.
How often should I train in martial arts?
The frequency of training varies based on personal goals, schedules, and the type of martial art. For beginners, 2-3 sessions per week are often recommended, while advanced practitioners may train more frequently.
